Utah Cheese Awards hopes third time is the charm.

May 1, 2019 – The Utah Cheese Awards, a yearly competition of Utah-made cheese plate foods has announced it’s 2019 show information.

The deadline is Friday, August 23. Cheese can be submitted in 11 categories. There are 9 categories of non-cheese foods. New this year is a candy category. Candy may use non-utah ingredients but must be made within the state. Call for entries, including sample delivery instructions and entry fee information is available on the show’s website, utahcheese.info. The Utah Cheese Awards has recruited three new judges to once again provide a rounded viewpoint.

Mary Malouf is executive editor of a local lifestyle magazine, Salt Lake magazine. Mary has a keen knowledge of the local dining scene and food writing experience that ranges from dining reviews to high-end grocery store copy. Mary has authored a Frommer’s guide and worked at dot com retailer wine.com

Bringing his unique energy to the show is Bill Allred. A morning radio personality at leading rock station X96 where he has worked since 1980. Trained as an actor (and still acting from time-to-time), Bill was chosen for his edgy personality, interest in cooking and the many culinary experiences his position has afforded him over the decades.

Nicholas Fahs is a chef, owner, and co-creator of Table X restaurant. A chef-owned, farm-to-table restaurant that won Salt Lake magazine’s 2019 dining award. Nicholas graduated from both the Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon France and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park NY. He has traveled extensively and managed kitchens in several states.

Asked to return for her third year judging is Tosha Rustad who is the cafe manager for Logan, Utah-based Caffe Ibis’ “Red Chair Cafe” which is located in the education building on the University of Utah Campus. Tosha has previously been a baker at Vosen’s and pastry chef at Current, both of Salt Lake City.

Judges scores will be used to award gold, silver and bronze medals as well as a “Best of Show” in cheese and non-cheese categories. Winners will be announced at a public event in the Salt Lake area in October and posted on the Utah Cheese Awards website.
